Zener breakdown occurs as a result of electric field (potential difference) leading to the rapture of covalent bonds to release electrons. While Avalanche breakdown results from collision of free electrons with atoms leading to ionisation of the atoms.
Zener breakdown occurs because of the high electric field whereas, the avalanche breakdown occurs because of the collision of free electrons with atoms.
