Repulsion only occurs when two like poles of a magnet exist while attraction can occur between unlike poles of a magnet and/or between a magnet and a magnetic material.

Repulsion is the only sure method since it test L’s the polarity of magnets, I.e like poles repels unlike poles attracts but attraction can between unlike poles or between poles of a magnet and a magnetic material

Repulsion only occurs between the like poles of the magnet while attraction can occur between two unlike poles of magnets or between a pole and a piece of an unmagnetized magnetic material.
