From the concept of floating, archimede’s idea, any object displaces its own weight in the fluid in which it floats, so the reason is simple in that; a good portion of the interior of the boat is air (unlike a cube of steel, which is solid throughout). The average density of a boat ( the combination of the steel and the air ) is very light compared to the average density of water while average density of solid steel is greater than average density of water. So very little of the boat actually has to submerge into the water before it has displaced the weight of the boat. Thus the boat floats while a solid steel sinks.

The commutator on the DC generator converts the AC into pulsating DC. ... On DC motor the purpose of the commutator is to insure that the current flowing through the rotor windings is always in the same direction, and the proper coil on the rotor is energized in respect to the field coils.

Repulsion is the only sure method since it test L's the polarity of magnets, I.e like poles repels unlike poles attracts but attraction can between unlike poles or between poles of a magnet and a magnetic material
